Subject Verb Agreement Worksheet

Using a subject verb agreement worksheet to learn and understand the topic is extremely important. This particular area of grammar is basic, yet also rather difficult. In our everyday speech, we tend to not focus so much on subject verb agreement. Therefore, when we are writing, those mistakes come out, but we do not notice them. Errors in subject verb agreement are one of the most frequent mistakes seen.

Defining Subject Verb Agreement

Subject verb agreement means exactly what it says:

that the subject and verb have to agree with each other.

For example, we cannot say "They takes the garbage out." "They" does not belong with the singular verb "takes," but rather with the plural verb "take." However, "take" does go with both "I" and "you." Most people do notice simple mistakes like this fairly readily.

Here's a few more examples of proper subject verb agreement:

  • He listens to the music.
  • They listen to the music.
  • She talks very quietly.
  • They talk very quietly.
  • I write with a pencil.
  • They write with a pencil.
  • He writes with a pencil.
  • You write with a pencil.

Using Worksheets

Using a subject verb agreement worksheet is a very practical way to engage students in the grammar lessons. However, students must also practice with the spoken word, since that is often where many mistakes are made. Encourage students to always use appropriate grammar in and outside of the classroom, and have them work together to create oral presentations center around the proper usage of subject verb agreement.
